The attics in the yard
The ravages of time take their toll on old buildings. We have had a major project to secure the attics in the yard for the future. With the help of the Cultural Heritage Fund, Norwegian Cultural Heritage and the SMIL scheme in Notodden Municipality, we were able to lift the attics and carry out the necessary work.
Both lofts were jacked up in turn, so that it was possible to carry out groundwork. Each individual foundation stone was dug up, it was insulated and the foundation was thoroughly laid. Drainage was also done around the area. The lofts did not have a halter – that is, logs that stabilized the posts in the bottom. Using ore pine from Tinnoset Sag, the necessary replacements of the material were made, and a halter was adapted. This is a bit of a puzzle with 9 posts in each loft. The cage stairs were also replaced with local natural stone.
It was not easy to find professionals who were willing to take on the job. Fortunately, the energetic and knowledgeable 75-year-old Jon Ivar Finnekåsa took on the task. Together with Leif, they delivered a very good result.
Now hopefully the attics will stand for another 100 years!
